Hedgehogs travel around one mile every night through our parks and gardens in their quest to find enough food and a mate. If you have an enclosed garden you may wish to consider a small alteration to allow free travel for these little creatures.
One of the main reasons hedgehogs are struggling in Britain is because our fences and walls are becoming more and more secure, reducing the amount of land available to them. As shown below a small alteration can make a HUGE difference.

We can make their life a little easier by removing the barriers within our control – for example, by making holes in or under our garden fences and walls for them to pass through.
Some people may be worried about cats and other animals coming into their garden however in the most part, a small cut off one fence post will not be large enough for dogs / badgers / foxes to get through. Cats will climb over the fence if they want into your garden. Foxes have been known to climb fences also believe it or not.
If you wish to try this, please do so and add details to the Big Hedgehog Map to help them track how many hedgehogs are in the area. In our area of Stonehaven there are 78 Hedgehogs and only 4 highway holes for them which is a very low ratio.
Please feel free to share photographs of your Hedgehog Highway and we will happily share it on our Facebook page to help encourage others to do so.
